James is a healthcare business leader, trusted strategic advisor, and cyber/digital technology leader advancing digital and cybersecurity risk oversight in America’s corporate boardrooms. He has a unique combination of operational and technical executive experience and has served within mid to large organizations in CIO, CISO, CTO, and COO executive roles. He holds five public and private cybersecurity and technology company trusted advisory board roles. James has held key executive roles in several multi-million dollar clinical and technology healthcare integration initiatives and mergers, managed teams with thousands of employees and contractors, and held budget responsibility for over $300 million per year. He is currently the Vice President of Cybersecurity & Risk Management and CISO at M Health Fairview, a 10-hospital, 50-clinic, academic health system with 34,000 employees, 5,000 affiliated providers, and $7 billion in annual revenue. He presents quarterly to the Audit and Compliance Committee of the Fairview Health Services Board of Directors. Before joining M Health Fairview, James was CIO at Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS), the second-largest municipal health system in the U.S. with 23 health centers and four hospitals. DHS annually cares for over 600,000 patients with an annual operating budget of $6 billion.
James was previously the CIO at Kaiser Permanente Orange County and held CTO and CISO roles at Hawaii Health Systems Corporation. He served as President of the award-winning Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) SoCal Chapter Executive Board of Directors. James holds 22 technical and professional certifications, has authored several healthcare information systems graduate school textbooks, and teaches as an adjunct professor at National University. James is a board Qualified Technology Expert (QTE), is a member of the National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Minnesota chapter, and is working on his NACD directorship certification.
