Jan Zeilinga, a seasoned cybersecurity expert with over 20 years of experience, currently holds the position of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at James Cook University (JCU). In this role, he leads strategic cybersecurity initiatives and sets the direction for protecting digital assets and keeping students and staff safe online.
Before joining JCU, Jan demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit and deep understanding of cybersecurity by founding First Point Global. Under Jan’s strategic leadership, this cybersecurity firm specialized in innovative security solutions and built a strong client portfolio. The company’s success led to its acquisition by global giant KPMG in 2015, a testament to Jan’s vision and business acumen.
Jan’s successful journey with First Point Global highlighted his ability to create, manage, and sell a high-performing cybersecurity company. It showcased his proficiency in both the technical aspects of cybersecurity and the critical areas of business and management.
In addition to his professional commitments, Jan has a deep passion for nurturing the next generation of cybersecurity leaders. This passion has led him to become a mentor and lecturer, guiding students through intensive cybersecurity boot camps. His dedication to fostering talent eventually drew him into academia, leading to his current role at JCU.
Jan’s academic credentials include an Executive MBA from UTS, a Bachelor of Data Comms from QUT, a Certified Information Security System Professional (CISSP), and a Graduate Member of the Company Directors Course (GAICD) from the Australian Institute of Company Directors. With his extensive experience in corporate and academic sectors, Jan is well-positioned to provide valuable insights and strategic direction as a board member.
